APOLINARIO DE LA CRUZ, popularly known as "HERMANO PULE or PULI" (BROTHER PULE), was on born on July 22, 1814 at Barrio Pandac, Lucban in Tayabas (now QUEZON PROVINCE).
He led a major revolt against SPANISH RULE in the PHILIPPINES.
At the age of 15, he decided to become a priest.
In 1832, he founded the COFRADIA DE SAN JOSE (COFRADIA OF ST. JOSEPH) composed of native Filipinos or INDIOS. The Filipino brotherhood fostered a practice of Christian values. The Cofradias prohibited Spaniards and Meztizos from joining without De La Cruz' permission.
Authorities ordered the dissolution of the Corfradia De San Jose. But despite the prohibition, the brotherhood's continued to grow.
Feeling attack on their religious freedom by the Catholic authorities, De La Cruz rallied 4,000 followers at Barrio Isabang on the slope of Mount Banahaw and was able to resist an attack by Alcarde-Mayor Joaquin Ortega and his 300 men. Ortega was killed.
In response, the Government annihilated the Cofradia and massacred hundreds of old men, women and children who joined Hermano Pule.
Hermano Pule fled but later captured. At the age of 27, he was executed by firing squad at the town of Tayabas. His head was cut off to give stern warning to those who would be doing the same. Hermano Pule may have influenced secular priest JOSE BURGOS who was executed in 1872 - to demand for racial equality in the clergy.
Today, the birthday (JULY 22) of Hermano Pule is declared as HOLIDAY in QUEZON PROVINCE.
