August is one of the longest months of the year or one of the seven months with 31 days. In the Philippines, the month of August is one of the highly anticipated months because of holidays and festivals. August is also the last month before the "BER" months, or months for CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION.
Manuel L. Quezon, the first President of the Commonwealth of the Philippines, was born on August 19, 1878 and died on August 1, 1944. In Quezon province, Quezon City and other parts of the country, his birthdate is a non-working holiday. He is known as "FATHER OF NATIONAL LANGUAGE".
August 21 is a regular holiday in the Philippines. It is the NINOY AQUINO DAY. NINOY AQUINO was assassinated on August 21, 1983 during his return to the Philippines from a self exile in the United States. He became a Senator from 1967 to 1972.
August 31, 2015 is a regular holiday in the Philippines. The NATIONAL HEROES DAY is celebrated every 4th Monday of August to honor Filipino heroes.
In Quezon Province, the NIYOGYUGAN FESTIVAL is happening every year during the month of August, except in 2014 due to great devastations brought by various calamities. The FESTIVAL is one way to honor MANUEL L QUEZON and to promote AGRICULTURE and TOURISM in the province. QUEZON PROVINCE is the number one producer of COCONUT PRODUCTS in the PHILIPPINES.
Personally, August 12, 1997 was a remarkable day for me. It was the day when I was released to fly an aircraft SOLO for the very first time at the GENERAL SANTOS INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT utilizing the T-41D Cessna Aircraft of the Philippine Air Force.
August 2015 has 5 Fridays, 5 Saturdays and 5 Sundays, It happens after 823 years. It is called by the Chinese as "SILVER POCKET FULL".
