According to what I understand based on readings and words during the holy masses, ASH WEDNESDAY is the beginning of LENTEN SEASON. It is 40 days before EASTER SUNDAY.
This blog provides explanations using the acronym ASH to describe the significance of ASH WEDNESDAY.
A is for ABSTINENCE. There are 2 days in the LENTEN season for ABSTINENCE, the ASH WEDNESDAY and the GOOD FRIDAY. We should NOT eat MEAT during these days.
S is for SACRIFICES. We should only eat one full meal during ASH WEDNESDAY and GOOD FRIDAY.
H is for the HEART. Lenten season means cleansing and purification of the HEART. It is also a coincidence that ASH WEDNESDAY usually happens during FEBRUARY, the month of the HEART.
